Evesham produced a scintillating display at the Webbswood Stadium to beat high-flying Swindon Supermarine and move up to fourth in the Evo-Stik Southern South & West Division. In front of their biggest crowd of the season, United comfortably put an end to Swindon`s unbeaten home record to make it four league wins in a row for in-form Paul Collicutt`s side.
Harding scored with header
United were soon into their stride and took the lead on just 5 minutes through defender Liam Harding, who met Lorcan Sheehan`s corner to dispatch a well-directed header past Connor Johns into the top corner. Swindon continued to be pegged back in their own half with top scorer Lance Smith going close with a glancing header and Sheehan and the lively Elliot Kennedy just off target after some impressive build-up play down the flanks. United`s neat passing football always posed a threat but out of the blue and in their first attack of the game the home side drew level in the 25th minute. Pantomime villain Nick Stanley who was playing against his hometown club, was adjudged to have caught the ankles of George Reid in the box and Brad Hooper stepped up to make no mistake from the resulting spot-kick. Play, however, quickly resumed to the other end with Smith finding the net with a terrific header from Joe Turley`s free-kick, but United`s celebrations were cut short when Smith was harshly penalised for an alleged push on Marine defender Zak Westlake – an embarrassing decision by referee James Durkin.
Kevin Sawyer was at full stretch to keep out Reid but it was more of the same in the second half and no surprise when United made it 2-1 ten minutes after the re-start. The impressive Smith burst into the Swindon box only to be pulled to the ground by debutant Jon Beeden and Smith got up to blast in from the penalty spot for his 8th goal of the season. Reid shot over for the hosts but a well-deserved victory was sealed with a third goal in the last minute, courtesy of Adam Mann`s surging run before finding the onrushing Kennedy whose first-time shot fizzed into the roof of the net to bag another precious three points for the Red and Whites.
“I don`t think anyone could argue with the result. We beat a very good team who hadn`t lost at home and the performance illustrated what a good squad of players we have at the club,” said a delighted Collicutt afterwards.
“To score three times away from home is very pleasing but arguably the best goal of the game was Lance Smith`s header which was inexplicably disallowed! “Nevertheless it was a great win and the fans we took with us were terrific”.
