Evesham United had much the better of the early stages of the game. In the sixth minute Jack Harding in the Banbury goal did well to dive at full stretch to tip away round the post for a corner a shot from the left hand edge of the penalty area by George Washbourne.

On 16 minutes Evesham went close again when a cross from the left by Sean Wood fell to Adam Mann at the six yard line, the Robins striker doing well to make room for a shot but Bradley Partner came to United’s rescue doing equally as well to block his goal-bound effort just three yards out. In the 23rd minute Banbury were once more grateful to Harding who did well to save a 12 yard shot from Liam Harding.

Evesham continued to dominate and on 36 minutes it was Andy Gunn’s turn to save Banbury from going behind when he kicked off the line a shot from Wood from eight yards out.

Two minutes later and Banbury’s most promising move of the game to that point saw Callum White surge forward from the half way line right to the edge of the Evesham penalty area before seeing his shot deflected wide.

Then two minutes before the interval a free-kick from the left by Mark Bell was cleared out by the Evesham defence to Bradley Cox, up for the set play, on the right and he hooked the ball back into the centre and though the ball was once more cleared away it was only as far as Duran Martin who unleased a shot from 25 yards which Kevin Sawyer in the Evesham goal did well to fling himself to his left to save.

Banbury had finally come into the game in the last ten minutes of the half but until then Evesham had been dominant though to be fair Banbury defended well under the pressure.

The second half began with Evesham once more dominating the game. On 55 minutes an intended cross from the left by Washbourne went right under the crossbar and had Harding back-peddling but the Banbury keeper managed to tip the ball over the bar for a corner.

On the hour mark Darius Browne whipped in a cross from the left which Sawyer did well to hold on to at the six yard line. At this point Banbury improved considerably and began to ask questions of the Evesham defence, questions that the visitors admittedly had the answers for but it was a much better period for Banbury. Both sides in the last half hour were looking for the goal which would likely earn them the three points but with both defences playing well neither were able to create clear chances.

It did look though as if Evesham had snatched victory in the last minute of the game when a cross from wide on the right by Louis McGrory went through to Nick Stanley who bundled the ball home past Harding at the far post but much to the relief of the Banbury supporters the Assistant Referee had his flag up for off-side.
