Swindon Supermarine are still wounded by Evesham United’s remarkable comeback victory last season, according to Robins manager Paul Collicutt.

United host Supermarine at the Jubilee Stadium tonight (7.45pm) aiming for a second win in the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West.

Evesham showed their fighting qualities on Saturday, fighting back from 1-0 down at Bashley to storm to a 4-1 triumph.

Evesham still have concerns over Lance Smith, who picked up a foot injury in pre-season, and Ashley Edenborough who suffered a knock in the match against Yate.

Supermarine slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Bishop’s Cleeve, despite a goal from Luke Hopper which ended their perfect start to the term.

Evesham manager Collicutt said: “We have taken four points out of a possible nine and Swindon Supermarine will be a tough test. Swindon are a decent side who have brought in several useful players over the summer.

“We beat them twice last season and I know the manner of our 4-3 win at their place hurt them badly and they are still wounded by what happened. In that match, we fought back from 3-1 down at half-time and had a man sent-off but scored three second-half goals to win. It was our most exciting game of last season.”

Evesham’s rousing second-half performance at Bashley was inspired by substitutes Sean Wood, George Washbourne and Kevin Slack.

“We created a lot of chances in the second-half and I thought came to life a little bit,” said Collicutt.

“At half-time, I told the lads we were disappointed with the way the first-half had gone and they needed to pull their fingers out. I was glad with the way the lads responded and, on another day, we could have scored six or seven goals. I was very pleased with the impact of the substitutes. The three substitutes came on and had a major influence on the game. I was pleased to get our first win after mediocre games against Yate and Slimbridge.”

Striker Adam Mann, who had a two-month holiday in Australia, played for an hour against Bashley. “Adam has not yet reached the levels of fitness we need him to be at,” explained Collicutt. “He was a large part of last season’s success but it will take him a while to get up to speed. ”
He added: “Evesham have always been notoriously slow starters and, after last season, I think teams are looking at us a lot differently.”
