Evesham United 4-0 Fleet Town

Both teams were struggling to exert any real control during the early passages of play, not due to footballing reasons, but due to the very windy conditions.

The 174 strong crowd were probably looking towards a home win for ‘The Robins’ against a very young Fleet Town side, who sit just one place above the foot of the Evo-Stik South Division One South Division.

Once both sides had realised that the ball on the floor was far more controllable than in the air, the game looked as though it could be a fairly even affair, that was until the 12th minute. Adam Page got down the left before sending his cross into the box, which was met by Steve Davies whose shot deceived the visiting keeper and gave the hosts the early advantage. In the following minute Fleet had a rare opportunity towards Evesham’s goal, winger Bradley Wilson broke through and his cross found Kofi Halliday who failed to equalise as his shot sailed high over the bar.

With Evesham now dominating large parts of the game, playing the better football, keeping possession, finding their passes & only on the odd occasion giving the ball away, usually due to a misplaced or over ambitious pass. With Fleet only being allowed the odd long-range effort the closest of which came from the boot of Billy Oram, on 32 minutes his 25-yard strike went high over the bar.

It was only going to be a matter of time until ‘The Robins’ would get another, so it came as no surprise when in the 35th minute, The Blues failed to deal with a looping corner & Davies was able to guide the ball home to get both his and Evesham’s second goal, giving the home side a 2 goal cushion as they went into the half time break.

The second half started exactly as the first had ended with Evesham dominating play, then against the run of play Fleet’s Edwin Placket saw his long-range shot go straight into the arms of Andy Hannah in the Evesham goal.

The home side extended their lead on 66 minutes, Kane Simpson picked up the ball in the Fleet half and beat 3 defenders before slotting the ball home to score his 16th goal in the red & white stripes.

Adam Page got the final goal of the game with a superb free kick, that found it’s way into the top right corner of the Fleet net, giving Harvey White no chance.
