Evesham bowed out of the Red Insure Cup tonight losing 2-1 at Southern Premier League Bedworth United.

Louis McGrory curled in an early free kick which Denham Hinds was glad to see sail just wide. At the other end Andrew Westwood did likewise while George Washbourne tried an audacious lob from 40 yards also missing the target. Jacob Sloggett should have given Evesham the lead left unmarked from Dan MacDonald’s cross but firing well over. Sloggett saw a near-post shot pushed behind for a corner and then there was a big let off when Washbourne’s inswinging cross hit a defender and the inside of the right-hand post before being hacked clear. But the Greenbacks found a way through in the 36th minute when Lewis Chester played Jordan Archer in on the right and his cross was bundled in at the neat post by strike partner Aron Wint.

The second half produced much more attacking intent right from the start. Edward Appleton got back in the nick of time to deny Dan MacDonald and Richard Wesley intercepted before firing wide. Evesham were denied by the woodwork again when Washbourne’s cross took a deflection and looped onto the bar before being scrambled clear. Moments later Carl Brown was a foot too high with a shot from 20 yards but it was Bedworth who doubled their lead in the 64th minute. Westwood found room on the right and his cross was perfect for Wint to head back across goal past the despairing dive of Josh Goddard.

Daniel Creaney hit a free kick just over and then sent Wint clear, his shot was blocked by Goddard, the ball rebound back onto the struiker and looked like crossing the line before being cleared. Almost immediately the ball was switched to the other end but there appeared to little danger until a horror moment for Hinds, totally miskicking and presenting substitute Adam Mann with the simplest of tap ins. The visitors pressed for an equaliser but on the break Chester almost sealed it when he burst past two defenders before shooting inches past the left upright. Hinds made a superb save to push away Lance Smith’s 25-yarder, then tipped over Liam Harding’s header and in the dying seconds hung on to McGrory’s low free kick.
