In 2015, Evesham United FC Juniors Co-Ordinator Dave Giles was asked by a relative to travel to Gambia and help with coaching football in a school near Banjul. As the retired Bank Manager said “I had time on my hands and thought great idea visit my relation, have some sunshine and help in a school coaching what more do I want!”.

Since then Dave has been three times and built a relationship with the school and the children and plans to go twice a year in March and November coaching four days a week for four weeks. The school is St Peters Basic juniors and Dave says “you can tell by the name it is really basic”.  The school had no footballs, kit, boots, cones or first aid kits, absolutely nothing.

Over the last three years Dave has built up kit and equipment at the school thanks to Evesham United Football Club where we have collected old kits and balls etc with the school now up and running.

Dave will go again this March and will take whatever he can get his hands on.  Dave says, “it is costly to take luggage on the plane as you know, and it’s carting the cases around”. The pictures of his time in Gambia shows what he is dealing with, plus the heat and lack of grass. The school and children are really grateful for whatever is donated.  Dave adds, “They all want to come to practice with at least 50 kids coming to the sessions for two hours and they love their football. I have passed on the gratitude they have shown to Evesham United Football Club and their thanks for their continued support in helping set up this worthwhile tie up with the school”. Dave concluded, “I wish to thank the sponsors of the Football Club whose kit sponsorship is not only worn by Evesham United Juniors, but it has an extended life in Gambia and everyone appreciates the help.
