Match Report & Pictures: Evesham United 1 vs Swindon Supermarine 1 aet (Evesham lost 5-4 on pens)

Evesham United missed out in the play-off semi-finals for the third time in four years after a night of high drama at the Jubilee Stadium writes Jon Palmer in the Gloucestershire Echo.

The match finished 1-1 after extra-time before Swindon Supermarine converted all five of their penalties in the shootout, with Evesham’s player of the year Adam Mann missing for the home side.

Lee Spalding’s Supermarine therefore progress to the final, where they will play Wimborne Town away on Monday.

It was a cruel way for Evesham’s season to end, having looked the more likely winners during both the 90 minutes and the extra 30.

They did have to come from behind however, with Bradley Gray putting Supermarine in front against his old club in the 17th minute.

Gray had also hit the post in the eighth minute.

Mat Liddiard’s header two minutes after half-time made it 1-1, but Evesham will feel they should have built an early lead.

Young forward Olly Mehew, on loan from Forest Green Rovers, caused problems with his pace and he had two one-on-ones either side of Gray’s goal but was foiled by Supermarine goalkeeper Josh Hill on both occasions.

Substitute Carl Brown had to head one off the line in the 58th minute and Zak Westlake hit the bar for Supermarine in the dying seconds before extra-time.

Garyn Preen was lively throughout and he saw an effort crash against the underside of the bar in the 96th minute, with Hill’s faint touch enough to keep it out.

Preen went close again and Mann nodded a cross from Matt Bennett over the bar after more good work from Preen.

Ewen Dunbar had a sight of goal, but his effort lacked power and Hill was able to block.

Mann set up Brown who had two efforts blocked and then saw his follow-up hacked off the line and Gray was denied a winner by Kevin Sawyer with two minutes of extra-time remaining.

Liddiard, Preen, Lewis and Dunbar were all successful from the spot, but Mann’s effort was wide of the right post and Sawyer, on his final appearance before retirement, was unable to stop any of Supermarine’s well taken spot kicks.
