Simon Fitter missed penalty

Simon Fitter

Simon Fitter`s first half penalty miss proved costly as Evesham were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Abingdon United at a windswept Spiers & Hartwell Jubilee Stadium. Midfielder Fitter wasted the opportunity from twelve yards after 16 minutes, when his spot-kick after Carl Brown had been fouled in the box, crashed against the visitors crossbar before being cleared.

United, however, had better luck three minutes before half-time. A ball in from left found Brown who turned his marker before finding the bottom corner. Soon after, Brown went close to adding a second curling his effort just over with keeper James Foster beaten.

In the opening action of the second half, dangerman Brown rolled a shot against the Abingdon woodwork with Foster no where to be seen and when play switched to the other end Tom Cross in the Robins goal saved at the second attempt from Toby Nowell.

The writing was on the wall leading up to Abingdon`s equaliser on 67 minutes. Jamie Hyde made a clumsy challenge on Nowell in the penalty area and up stepped Aaron Woodley to score from the spot. Abingdon were content to sit on a point and defended in numbers to protect their share of the spoils. The closest Evesham came to grabbing their first win of 2013, saw substitute Leigh Downing go close after being set-up by the hardworking Brown.
