On a bright sunny afternoon Evesham Ladies met Ludlow Ladies for the HWWCFL League Cup Final at Walshes Meadow home of Stourport Swifts.

Although Cup Final nerves were shown by both sides at the start, Evesham started brightly and an early cross from right back Jessica Newman was met by Hannah Campbell, but her first time shot went just wide of the post. Evesham continued to press with wingers Sophie Griffiths and Grace Harker putting in crosses which Campbell and Katie Armento were just failing to convert due to some fine goal keeping by the Ludlow keeper.

At the other end of the pitch Ludlow striker Lisa Preece was keeping the Evesham centre backs Millie and Katie Meadows on their toes with some incisive runs, but initially wasn’t troubling Evesham keeper Kelly Fowkes. Evesham continued to press and mid way through the first half the breakthrough came when Campbell picked up a ball on the left hand side of the area and shot strongly low into the far corner. This allowed Evesham to relax a little and start to control midfield with Rosie Johns and Kasey Corbett influential and as Johns found space in the heart of midfield she broke through the Ludlow defence to shoot low under the keeper to double the lead. Evesham continued to press as the first half was ticking away. From a free kick from the right Johns crossed the ball into the box and the ball fell to Griffiths who shot passed the keeper.

After much needed refreshment at half time the game continued with Evesham now playing with the sun behind them. Hollie Bond replaced Fowkes in goal for Evesham with Fowkes moving to right back and Bethany Guy continuing at left back. Evesham continued to press and although thwarted in the first half it wasn’t long before Armento got on the score sheet. Evesham were now in full flight with Griffiths continuing to cause havoc on the right with more crosses and Armento again latched on to double her tally. Corbett took a knock and was replaced by Chloe Thomson in the middle of the park and shortly after Armento completed her hat-trick with a typical strike firing high over the keeper into the top corner.

Evesham made further changes with Paige Williams and Immy Wray replacing Campbell and Armento. Ludlow were not giving up and Sara Bergtson put Preece through on goal but from a tight angle her shot came off the bar. The play moved up the other end of the park and Williams was unlucky not to score as the Ludlow keeper again pushed the shot round the post. Tor Rawlings replaced Harker for Evesham and with the clock running down Evesham forced another free kick on the left. Evesham captain Johns floated a superb ball towards the far post which Griffiths met powerfully to head past the keeper to complete the scoring and bring the cup home to Evesham!
