Evesham go in search of FA Trophy success today when they host Market Drayton Town in the preliminary round (3pm) writes the Evesham Journal.

The Robins are keen to embark on a money-spinning run in the competition after crashing out of the FA Cup to Stourbridge in the first qualifying round last month. There is £2,500 at stake for the winners at the Spiers and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium as well as the incentive of a home tie against Leek Town.

Chairman Jim Cockerton said: “It’s very important to any club. We wanted to have a good run in the FA Cup but the next best thing is the FA Trophy. If we win this, we have got another home tie against Leek so it’s very important to us. It was disappointing to go out to Stourbridge, but they are our bogey side.”

Market Drayton are fifth from- bottom in Northern League Division One South, the same level as Evesham, with two wins from 10 games.

United lost 3-2 at home to Bishops Cleeve on September 24 but beat Clevedon Town 3-1 seven days prior to that.

Cockerton, however, feels the team are improving and has also been pleased to see fans stick with them as 172 watched the defeat to Bishops Cleeve.

He added: “I think the support has been pretty good considering some of the performances. The displays have been improving but the results haven’t.”

Market Drayton made headlines during the summer after former France and Tottenham Hotspur defender Pascal Chimbonda turned out in pre-season.  Chris Hutchings, former manager of Bradford City, Wigan Athletic, Derby County, Walsall and Ipswich Town is the Assistant Manager.
