Evesham United Ladies 12 vs 1 Wyre Forest Phoenix

On a superbly sunny day two unbeaten teams met in Evesham. The hosts were in inspired form from the start and with almost the first attack winger Sophie Griffiths beat the defender and shot strongly over the keeper to start the scoring. Wyre Forest tried to reply immediately but a smart save from stand in keeper Sophie Broome denied them the chance. Evesham then turned up the heat on the visitors and the strike force of Hannah Campbell (3), Katie Armento (1) and Sophie Griffiths (2) added to the goals in the first half whilst Wyre Forest continually battled to get into the game. Half time 7-0

Due to the very nature of the Wyre Forest side who had showed they wouldn’t give up, they came out strongly in the second half. The visitors earned themselves a free kick and Molly Maguire fired a shot over everyone to open the Wyre Forest account. However this just seemed to wake up the Evesham Ladies again and Immogen Wray charged down the keepers kick and followed the rebound to tap in her first senior goal. Sophie Griffiths scored another, chipping the keeper. This was followed by further goals from Armento, Griffiths and captain Rosie Johns who had played in three different positions during the match. Special mention should be made of Hannah Watts and Kasey Corbett in midfield for Evesham who sprayed passes across the pitch all afternoon. A thoroughly impressive display by the Evesham Ladies against good opposition.

The game was played in a competitive but mutually respectable manner by both sides, giving the referee an easy afternoon, Sophie Griffiths and Emilia Sinden were awarded players of the match for Evesham and Wyre Forest Phoenix respectively.
