24.11.13  Evesham Utd Ladies 4 vs Welland Ladies 1

On a very bright but cold afternoon the two ladies teams put on a battling display. Evesham started brightly with Captain Rosie Johns breaking through the Welland defence on a few occasions early on but shot either wide, high or too close to Welland keeper Jennifer Shail. It wasn’t until 20 minutes in, that Johns collected the ball on the edge of the area and angled a shot across the keeper into the far corner to give the hosts the lead. This however seemed to lift Welland more than Evesham and they started to push Evesham back into their own half. The Evesham defence were generally dealing with Welland’s attacks and trying to hit the hosts on the break. However during one of the Welland attacks the ball fell nicely for striker Zena Jones who shot across goal to equalise. Evesham continued to push but were unable to score again in the first 45 minutes.

The second half was more like the early part of the first half with Evesham continuing to press. Welland however continued to hassle and tried to break down Evesham’s attacks, whilst Shail continued to bring off a number of excellent saves. Eventually Evesham striker Katie Armento chipped the ball from the right hand side which Shail got her fingers to but the ball dropped in over her head. This seemed to make the Evesham midfield of Kasey Corbett and Hannah Watts relax and play more of their passing football, with Hannah Campbell and Nicole Maher attacking down the flanks.

Another Evesham move saw Campbell take the ball to the goal line and cross a ball to the far post for Maher to head in her first goal for the team on her birthday. Welland lifted their play and tried to come back at the hosts but the Evesham defence were holding firm. An attack down the left saw Grace Harker shoot, but this was blocked by Shail, however it rebounded to Harker who scored at the second attempt. Welland continued to try long shots but Jessica Newman in the Evesham goal was equal to them allowing Evesham to see out the game.

The game was competitive and physical but both teams showed respect to one another with Chloe Thomson and Jennifer Shail taking players of the Match for Evesham and Welland respectively.
