Paul Collicutt described Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat at old club Bishop’s Cleeve as “a match too far” for his Evesham United side in the Gloucestershire Echo.

They had won nine of their previous 10 games to remain in the play-off hunt, but any hopes of a top five finish all but evaporated at Kayte Lane.

“It was not Tuesday that has cost us a place in the play-offs,” Collicutt, who celebrated his 57th birthday yesterday, said.

“It was earlier in the season when we let ourselves down. The lads did well to keep the season alive, but Tuesday was a game too far and runs like the one we were on have to come to an end at some point.

“I can see why Cleeve have only lost three games at home all season and if they work as hard as that in every game they could be in the top six next season.”

Evesham host North Leigh on Saturday (3pm).
