Evesham United won their home FA Carlsberg Trophy Preliminary Round match to set up a First Round Qualifying game with Leek Town. Evesham had to come from a goal down against their Northern League Division One South opponents Market Drayton Town.
After a quiet opening with few chances testing both keepers, the game came to life when an excellent through ball from Carl Brown was taken on by Lance Smith, who clean through on goal miscued his shot. Market Drayton took the lead on 40 minutes after poor marking at a corner led to the ball coming out to defender Sam Westray whose bicycle kick went in the goal. On the stroke of half time Carl Brown saw his powerful shot tipped over by the visitors goalkeeper Damien Stevens.
In the second half, an improved display saw Evesham score three times. First on 48 minutes Lance Smith’s good work down the left was rewarded when Linden Dovey slotted home past the keeper. Dovey could have scored again three minutes later but slipped at the vital moment set up again by Smith.
